“It’s important to consider the five people who are in your inner circle because they are going to deeply and profoundly influence you,” says Darrah Brustein, (Founder of Network Under 40)
Who all are in your inner circle, have they helped you GROW ?? That’s the big question. Well, this blog gives insights on why you should have a small inner circle and how to identify an actual ally for growth.
Famous workplace expert and author of 3 bestsellers, Lynn Taylor begins by saying, “There are so many resources available, but the quality is much more important than quantity.” In her article for ‘Psychology Today,’ she lists down the traits of a genuine ally, which are as follows,
- They’re not judgmental.
- They’re good listeners.
- They encourage you to take risks but are rationals as well.
- They find a way to be available to you.
- They respect and acknowledge your thoughts and ideas.
- They’re not envious and are self-sufficient with their own success.
- They don’t look down upon anyone, mostly.
- You generally look forward to your next conversation with them.
- After being around them, you feel more self-confident and positive.
- They have a healthy sense of humour.
- There’s mutual strong eye contact and they display positive body language.
When it comes to the significance of a small inner circle, here’s what we found in an article by Scott Gerber (CEO, The Community Co) for Harvard Business Review, “By giving your time to fifty people rather than, say, five, you are making far less of an impact in the world than the sheer volume of your network would have you think.”
Another interesting analogy to explain the WHY behind a smaller yet stronger inner circle by Martin Luenendonk, (Co-Founder – FounderJar and Cleverism) goes, “We go to networking events and try to make as many new contacts as possible. As a result, we end up having a lot of superficial acquaintanceships instead of genuine friendships.
Without strong connections with the people we consider our inner circle, we really don’t have an inner circle.
If you have watched the movie 300, you definitely remember how King Leonidas of Sparta famously faced thousands of Persian soldiers with just 300 carefully selected men.
This is because he knew that having a small army of brave soldiers is better than having a large army of cowardly soldiers.”
In a nutshell, “Surround yourself with those who won’t compete but will revel in your success and see your ascent as a reflection of their own possibilities.” ~T. D. Jakes.
Looking forward to seeing you on the path to great success.
